‘No doubt’… Alan Shearer predicts where Liverpool will finish in the Premier League this season

Alan Shearer has given his take on where Liverpool will end up in the Premier League table this season.

The Reds are currently looking good at the top of the league. With over half of the campaign now behind us, Liverpool are three points clear.

That would seemingly mark them out as real contenders. And with pundits like Jamie Carragher now beginning to back them, Shearer has done the same.

Speaking to The Rest Is Football podcast, the legendary striker has claimed that Jurgen Klopp’s team will be right in the title mix up until the last.

“They are going the distance,” said Shearer. “There is no doubt about it, they are going the distance. They will be right up there come the last weekend of the season. They are a really good team.

“Van Dijk is back to his best, Trent is having a great time, they have an unbelievable goalkeeper and when you have the brilliance of Mo Salah you have every chance. They have game changers which can do that coming off the bench, they have so many options.”

Shearer backs Liverpool title push

We’d perhaps hold off on making such a bold claim as Shearer just yet, but you have to say that all of the signs are good for Liverpool.

They’ve been here before, of course and that experience will surely help them as they look to assert some dominance on proceedings.

Aside from that, on the pitch they just seem to be getting better and better.

It has to be said that over the last couple of months of 2023, Liverpool were picking up points without really playing well. Late winners were needed all too frequently and the Reds still had the feel of a team working itself out.

But over the past handful of games, something has really started to click.

They were sensational in high-scoring performances at home to West Ham United, and again on Monday against Newcastle.

In between, they were unlucky not to take three points from the game against Arsenal and also beat Burnley pretty convincingly. The red machine is rumbling.

As Shearer rightly points out, Liverpool’s title challenge is underpinned by four exceptional players. With Salah on his way to AFCON that now becomes three. If the Reds can see out the period without their No.11 and still remain top, that’s when we’ll really start to believe.
