Liverpool are still following ‘phenomenal’ midfielder, they’ve already made contact before

Liverpool are still keeping an eye on one of their reported transfer targets from the summer.

The Reds were linked with loads of player before finally settling on their four new midfield signings. But one of those most heavily rumoured to be on his way to Anfield was Manu Kone.

With Liverpool having reportedly spoken to Kone’s agents, it seemed like a transfer away from Borussia Monchengladbach was just a matter of time. In the end though, nothing materialised and the 22-year-old stayed in Germany.

Now though, according to journalist Rudy Galetti, the Reds might not be quite finished with Kone.

Taking to X this morning, Galetti gave an update on the Frenchman’s situation. And it seems that Liverpool are still in the hunt. But they’re not the only ones.

“PSG added Manu Kone to their list of midfielders,” the Italian journalist reports. “The French player – whose contract with Gladbach expires in 2026 – is also followed by Liverpool and Tottenham.”

Liverpool back in for Kone

In truth, we’d still be fans of this one. Kone is not quite an out-and-out defensive midfielder, but he fits the profile of the kind of player who could be perfect there for Liverpool.

Big, physical and box-to-box, the France U21 international could really take the Reds up a gear. Pundit Mark Schwarzer called Kone ‘phenomenal’ last season. He’s certainly got potential.

Nevertheless, we can’t see why Liverpool would be returning to sign him.

Clearly there was an opportunity to bring him to Anfield over the summer. If Jurgen Klopp had been convinced by Kone, he’d have signed him then.

Since then, the former Toulouse man has hardly set the Bundesliga alight either. Having gone into the season carrying an injury, Kone has only played 10 times in all competitions for Gladbach.

If Klopp wasn’t convinced in the summer, then he won’t have seen anything to sway him since then.

Consequently, we’d say that if Liverpool really are still keeping tabs on Kone, a move would be much more likely next summer.

By then, the Reds could well be looking for a replacement for Thiago Alcantara. As long as Kone is still at Gladbach, he should remain an option.
