Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has praised Liverpool’s intensity after facing them in the Premier League yesterday.
Having clashed with the Reds plenty of times as a player with Manchester City, it was Kompany’s first time doing so as a coach. In the end, his Clarets side were little match for Liverpool, who rode to a comfortable 2-0 win.
And speaking to the press after the game, the Belgian was generous with his praise of Jurgen Klopp’s team.
“It’s a top team, there’s no doubt,” Kompany enthused. “You play against the top sides and what’s really apparent especially in this league is that every team at the top has a different style, different ideas, different strengths. Liverpool have got different strengths than Tottenham or Arsenal or City, but they’re a top side. To be top in the Premier League you have to have top players.
The former City captain also touched on where he sees this current Liverpool team, compared to the brilliant side he faced in the late 2010’s.
“The funny thing is I was thinking of my days playing against probably one of the greatest sides they’ve had in recent history,” Kompany explained. “Look, in terms of quality I think the future will tell, but in terms of intensity they are getting back to the levels that I’ve known when I was facing them as a player. Then they’re very dangerous and very difficult to play against.”
Kompany praises Liverpool intensity
In all honesty, we’d have to say that Liverpool weren’t at all at their most intense whilst playing Burnley yesterday.
There were moments when the Reds slipped through the gears, of course. But by and large, they never really needed to truly up the pace of the game.
That was partly to do with Kompany’s own team being a little sloppy in possession and a bit slow out of the traps themselves.
But perhaps owing to a slight Christmas hangover, Liverpool were lethargic and quite slow in their play.

Nevertheless, it’s still nice to hear that Kompany felt otherwise. He’s clearly very familiar with the Reds having battled with them for various titles over the years.
For Klopp, he’ll be inwardly delighted to hear one of City’s stalwarts comparing his great Liverpool team to this current iteration.
But Jurgen will also know that there’s plenty of work still to do. Had Burnley been better on Wednesday then they very well may have snatched an unlikely point. In the end, the Reds did enough. They’re top of the league.
Away from the day-to-day of facing them, Kompany will no doubt be hoping that Manchester City can rise again and stop Liverpool from winning this title. In turn, City fans will have been hoping for something from their old skipper last night. Sorry lads, no dice.
