Darwin Nunez couldn’t help but do a dance of joy after Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Burnley this evening.
Nunez was finally on the scoresheet for the Reds. After 12 games without a goal, the 24-year-old buried an early effort to put Liverpool 1-0 up.
Although things got a little hairy at times after that, Diogo Jota came on to mark his return from injury with a late goal of his own. 2-0 it finished.
And at full-time, the travelling Liverpool fans couldn’t hide their delight at seeing Jota back on the pitch. As seen on a video from AsimLFC on X, Reds supporters belted out the 27-year-old’s song once the final whistle had gone.
Nunez himself appeared to be getting into the swing of things. The Uruguayan pumped both hands above his head and jumped up and down as ‘Oh his name is Diogo’ rang out across Turf Moor.
Nunez joins in the fun
Darwin has every reason to feel pleased with himself this evening. After going so long without finding the net, he finally has that feeling back tonight.
It was a lovely goal as well.
Collecting the ball outside the area, Nunez slotted through a gang of Burnley players into James Trafford’s far corner.
With Liverpool creating chances, there was perhaps a feeling that the floodgates may then open for Darwin. But that never quite happened.
Nonetheless, Liverpool’s No.9 will simply have been relieved to finally get the monkey off his back.
As for Jota, well, how the Reds have missed him. Steve McManaman claimed before the game that the Portuguese was actually Liverpool’s second best attacker, behind Mohamed Salah.
If McManaman was looking for Diogo to illustrate that point, then he wasn’t waiting for long. The former Wolves man showed trademark composure to slot home a second, killer goal for Liverpool.
Having watched the likes of Nunez work hard but fail to find the net of late, Jota’s ruthlessness was an overwhelmingly welcome sight for Reds fans. No wonder they were singing his name.
Dance Darwin, you’ll have to get used to this one being sung again.
