Harry Redknapp says Liverpool have a midfielder who could play for any team in the Premier League

Harry Redknapp has urged Jurgen Klopp to start picking Curtis Jones for Liverpool much more often than he does.

Jones stole the show for the Reds last night. His two goals in the 5-1 rout of West Ham United rightfully earning him the game’s Man of the Match award.

The 22-year-old was on the receiving end of plenty of praise after the match. Jamie Carragher claimed that Curtis had played his way into the XI for Arsenal on Saturday, while Cody Gakpo had a special live-on-air message for his teammate, too.

But it didn’t stop there. Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports’ coverage of the Carabao Cup tie, Redknapp also weighed in.

“He could go and walk in almost any team in the Premier League and go and play regularly,” the former Tottenham Hotspur coach said of Jones.

“But he obviously wants to stay there and win his place at Liverpool. And it looks to me like it is only a matter of time before he breaks in. He looks too good not to play.”

Jones takes the praise

Jones deserves the plaudits from last night. Against a tough-looking West Ham midfield of Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez, the academy graduate really stepped up.

He was far from the only Liverpool player to look revitalised, but his two goals made Curt the symbol of an excellent night at Anfield.

Nevertheless, we shouldn’t start getting carried away.

Jurgen Klopp gave a little reminder as to why Jones may have been out of the team more often than he’s been in it this season so far.

Whilst also praising his No.17 post-game, Klopp did admit that Jones has been a little too slow on the ball at times in the past, and needs to work on that.

Any Liverpool fan listening to those comments will understand exactly what the manager is getting at.

There are days – like yesterday – where Jones looks capable of being the player the Reds are missing in midfield. But he’ll often follow that up with a disappointing performance on the back of it.

If Curtis can get that consistency into his game then there’s no reason he can’t be a mainstay for Liverpool moving forwards. As Redknapp says, he loves the club and is determined to make that happen for himself. On the back of last night, you wouldn’t bet against him doing it.
