Curtis Jones has admitted that it was a dream to play with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at Liverpool.
Oxlade-Chamberlain left the Reds this summer following a successful six-year spell at Anfield. Although he perhaps harbours some regrets over his later time at the club, Ox was a big part of a trophy-laden period.
And according to Jones, he’d always wanted to play with the 30-year-old right from when he was a kid.
Speaking during a special ‘Carpool Karaoke’ video on Liverpool’s YouTube Channel yesterday, the Scouser was asked to name his favourite Christmas memory. Surprisingly – and touchingly – it included his former teammate.
“Oxlade-Chamberlain when I was, phew, I can’t even remember how old I was but he still played at Arsenal, and he was actually one of my idols as a kid,” explained the 22-year-old.
“He had a pair of boots and that was the only thing that was on my list – the same boots as Chamberlain had on and I got them for Christmas and I still remember it to this day. How mad is that, and then I was playing with him, sick that isn’t it!”
Jones reveals Ox dream
This was a really nice little story to listen to from Jones. And it just serves as a reminder of how good a player Oxlade-Chamberlain was on his day.
Coming through at the Liverpool academy, Jones would have had a huge number of stars to look up to.
Having broken through in 2019, he’d have already been watching the likes of Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
Those are players who any young footballer would surely aspire to be playing with, and Jones surely did.

But all the same, it’s warming to hear that one of Liverpool’s less-heralded stars was capturing the attention of the Reds’ youngsters.
Since dropping out of the regular XI after his big injury in 2018, Ox perhaps felt frustrated at being on the periphery at Liverpool. But he was still a big contributor during his time at the club.
The former Arsenal man is also a superb personality. Always at the forefront of the group even when out of the team, Ox has been a big miss since leaving six months ago.
For Curtis, he’s played with much more storied players of Liverpool’s recent past over the last five years or so. But it’s pleasing to hear one of Jurgen Klopp’s lesser leading lights getting some overdue credit here.
