‘Excited’… 25-year-old Liverpool player shares why he can’t wait to play against West Ham tonight

Liverpool take on West Ham United this evening in the second of their Anfield triple-header this week.

After drawing against Manchester United on Sunday, the mood is slightly subdued amongst the fanbase. But with Arsenal coming to town on Saturday, a win tonight would give everyone a boost.

This evening’s game may be the least attractive of the three this week, but speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Caoimhin Kelleher says he’s ‘excited’ to face the Hammers nonetheless.

“It’s the quarter-finals now so it will be a big game for us, in front of Anfield as well,” says the goalkeeper.

“It’s going to be a tough game against West Ham but hopefully we can get the win and go one step closer to Wembley again.

“Obviously I’ve had some great moments in this competition. Personally, it has given me a lot of chances to get games and stuff like that. I only have good memories when this competition comes around, so I’m always excited to play in it.”

Kelleher makes Carabao claim

With it now being the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, some fans may have been wondering if Alisson Becker would be on goalkeeping duty tonight.

But according to liverpoolfc.com, Kelleher will be the man between the sticks.

As the Irishman says, he’s already won this competition once with the Reds. The run to lift the trophy in 2022 included a quarter-final against then FA Cup holders Leicester City, a two-legged tie with Arsenal and a final with Chelsea. Kelleher has the experience.

As a result, no one should feel nervous about the 25-year-old being in net for tonight’s game.

Having only played four times last season, Kelleher has now amassed 9 appearances in 2023/24. That’s already a record in a season for the Ireland international. Should Liverpool progress, he’ll be guaranteed at least two more. So, Caoimhin has even more incentive to win against West Ham.

As his future remains the subject of scrutiny, this season may very well be his final chance to win another Carabao Cup at Liverpool.

Given the teams left in the competition, the Reds should be confident of doing that. But with injury issues hanging over the squad, tonight’s game is going to be a real challenge.

Nevertheless, home advantage is a big one for Liverpool. Anfield doesn’t tend to disappoint in these fixtures. Just like Kelleher, we’re looking forward to seeing what this evening has in store.
