Piero Hincapie could reportedly be sold by Bayer Leverkusen, with Liverpool interested in signing the Ecuador defender.

The 21-year-old has hardly featured for Xabi Alonso’s side this season with the former Liverpool midfielder leading Leverkusen to top of the Bundesliga standings heading into 2024.

With a release clause worth €70m (£60m), Hincapie is still regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders in all of Europe, with the youngster a regular for Leverkusen last year.

However, according to Fussball Transfers, Alonso’s side could now be tempted into selling Hincapie in January, with Liverpool interested in signing the South American centre-back.

Also being tracked by AC Milan, AS Roma and West Ham, interest is certainly high in Hincapie despite making just two Bundesliga starts all season.

And for Liverpool, it seems fairly evident that the Reds could look to sign Hincapie as Jurgen Klopp widens his search for a new defender in the January transfer window.

Hincapie has had an unusual 12 months at Leverkusen, with the defender going from one of the Bundesliga side’s most prized assets to nothing but a squad player.

Yet despite this fall from grace, there’s clearly something in the defender that has caught Liverpool’s eyes, and Hincapie could be an option for the Reds in January.

Able to play left-back and centre-back, the youngster’s versatility could be an appealing proposition for Liverpool as a new defensive signing next month.

And if Leverkusen are now willing to sell Hincapie, there’s every chance that the German side will lower their demands for the Ecuador international, which could appeal greatly to Liverpool.
