Jamie Carragher digs up seven-month old Gary Neville post about Liverpool, after Manchester United’s defeat last night

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has aimed a subtle dig at Gary Neville following Manchester United’s Champions League exit.

United shockingly fell out of the competition at the Group Stage last night. Finishing bottom of a group containing FC Kobenhavn, Galatasaray and Bayern Munich is a genuine humiliation for the Red Devils.

But one man’s pain can be another man’s pleasure where football is concerned. And that’s certainly the case for Carragher here. Taking to X after last night’s game, the former Liverpool defender made sure to dig up a post his old pal Neville put out in May.

“Klopp needs to rebuild an ageing squad but no CL is a lot of money lost and they don’t just need 1 or 2!” the United legend wrote on May 6th.

These two are famous for going back and forth on matters regarding their respective clubs. There’s certainly a huge element of schadenfreude from Carragher.

Neville – like many United fans – may have been bold about Liverpool’s failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League. But who’s laughing now.

United suffer CL humiliation

Liverpool fans will obviously have enjoyed seeing their old rivals go out of Europe in the manner they did last night.

Not only did they crash out of the Champions League, but they also failed to even drop down to join the Reds in the Europa League. To finish bottom of a group containing two – with all due respect – sub-par sides at that level is desperately poor.

But Liverpool supporters should perhaps sound a note of caution before they laugh too hard. There is a game to be played between the two teams on Sunday after all.

In plenty of years gone by, the roles have been reversed here. Liverpool have been the ones going into the game under a cloud, while United sit pretty at the top of the table. In plenty of years gone by, the Reds have managed to pull an unlikely result from the fire in such circumstances.

They’ll be overwhelming favourites for this weekend’s game at Anfield. But it isn’t a foregone conclusion. Jurgen Klopp will be wary of that, and we can’t allow any complacency to creep in.

If Liverpool are at it, then they could genuinely repeat their 7-0 hammering of Erik ten Hag’s side from last season. United’s confidence will be rock-bottom after a damaging week.

But it’s often at those moments that the big clubs come out swinging.

So, although Reds fans are right to lap this up a little – and the likes of Neville will get plenty come their way in the coming days – we should remember ourselves until the game on Sunday is done. Once three points are in the bag though, all bets are off.
