Liverpool could look to sign £60m England international who Gary Lineker raved about

Liverpool have started drawing up their shortlist for centre-back targets following Joel Matip’s season-ending injury.

Matip unfortunately looks to have played his last game for the Reds. Having gone down with an ACL problem last weekend, Liverpool are now looking a little light in defence.

Luckily, they have a chance to rectify that in just a few weeks time, when the January transfer window flies open. And according to The Mirror, Liverpool have set their sights on a new addition.

They claim that the Reds are looking at the possibility of signing Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi.

However, Guehi reportedly won’t be available immediately, with Palace said to be categorically unwilling to sell him before the end of the season. If interest does solidify in the 23-year-old, it’s claimed that the Eagles will ‘demand a huge fee.’

Nevertheless, Liverpool are claimed to ‘highly rate’ Guehi, who is said to be on Arsenal’s radar, too.

Liverpool go after Guehi

You can certainly see the appeal of Guehi to Liverpool. Young, Premier League proven, home-grown, a full international. The list goes on.

But because of all of those things, it also means that the former Chelsea youngster is going to be a hard man to prise away from Selhurst Park.

He was a bit of a coup when signed in 2021, and Palace have done well to hang onto him in the meantime, too.

Now though, it feels almost inevitable that they’ll have to part ways with Guehi in the near future.

With nine England caps now under his belt, he’s in a good position to make it into Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming Euros.

On his most recent display for the national team, Gary Lineker told The Rest Is Football podcast that he’d been ‘really impressed’ with Guehi.

“You look at the back for England and central defence, but John Stones is an exceptional footballer, Harry Maguire has never let his country down and I thought Marc Guehi when he came on was really impressive and authoritative,” said the Match of the Day presenter following England’s game with Italy in October.

That’s the kind of praise which has reportedly seen Palace slap a £60m price-tag on the defender’s head [The Daily Mail]. For that kind of money, we really can’t see Liverpool’s interest going all that much further. Better, and cheaper options to be had elsewhere.
