Jurgen Klopp left baffled over what Liverpool journalists and fans are ‘always’ talking about

Jurgen Klopp has hit out at questions about Liverpool dipping into the transfer market in January.

Klopp has hit the headlines this week following an ill-tempered exchange with Amazon Prime presenter Marcus Buckland on Wednesday.

And the Liverpool manager perhaps risked the wrath of the journalistic community once again with a short-fused answer to a question from The Athletic’s James Pearce this morning. Having already touched upon Joel Matip’s long-term injury, Klopp was asked by Pearce whether the Reds now need to bolster their defence in the New Year.

“Do you think you have enough cover in that department to last until the summer or do you think it’s something you have to look at in January?” asked the reporter.

“In eight years I have been here I just never understand this,” Jurgen replied. “You always talk about transfers as if it would be the easiest thing in the world. Just bring in a player, find the money, as if we have endless money. We always talk about it. I really don’t understand it. You, the fans, everybody talks about it if we need another player. They all cost money! It must be the right player. Tell me a club that wants to sell a top, top, top centre-half. If you tell me one. Not a centre-half, a top centre-half because he has to play for Liverpool. Why should we start that process?

“Joel will be out for a long, long time which is really bad for us. We still have four centre halves. That’s absolutely alright.”

Klopp questions transfer talk

You have to feel a little for Pearce here. Ever since Matip’s injury was confirmed, all Liverpool fans have been able to talk about is the need for a new addition in January.

With that in mind, the rumour mill has already started whirring. Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix is the latest to be linked with the Reds.

So, with the press conference coming to a close and the question still left unasked, Pearce deserves credit for putting it to Klopp. The fans do want to know after all.

Unfortunately, not for the first time, the reporter felt the wrath of Jurgen’s anger.

We understand from the manager’s point of view it must be frustrating to be asked again and again about new players. But in all fairness, there is a transfer window coming up. It would be nice if the Reds’ boss treated that like an opportunity and not an inconvenience.

Besides, when it comes to transfers, Jurgen appears to give the fanbase little to no credit. Everybody knows the difficulties in January, and no one is expecting a hugely expensive new signing. That isn’t the question that was asked.

Rather, it would have been nice to know where Liverpool now stand in regards to the possibility of a signing. If Klopp didn’t want to give the game away, a straight-bat answer would even have been better.

Anyway, we wouldn’t read too much into this, if Liverpool are working on a deal then they’d be hugely unlikely to say anyway. We’ll just have to wait and see.
