Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has said he turned down the chance to join Liverpool when he was coming through at Nottingham Forest.

The 30-year-old attacker was once one of England’s highest-rated prospects, with Bamford eventually joining Chelsea before finding his way at Leeds in 2018 for a reported £10m.

A one-time England international, Bamford’s career in recent years with the Whites has been plagued with injury, with the striker yet to score this season for Leeds.

Yet speaking to My Mate’s A Footballer, Bamford revealed that Liverpool made an offer to sign the forward when he was making a name for himself in Forest’s youth ranks.

Bamford said about Liverpool’s rejected transfer bid for him: “That season it was weird because I had finished my A-levels the year before at school but I was still a U-18 player.

“So that pre-season of that season, we played Chelsea in a friendly when I was at Forest and I scored a hat-trick but it was just to me I thought nothing of it, in terms of that is going to lead to me going to Chelsea.

“It was just getting ready for the upcoming season. Then I was starting to be more and more involved in the first team, even though I was with the youth team.

“And the FA Cup Youth Cup, we had that year and played Sunderland, Wigan, and Southampton and I scored 11 goals in three games and then people started taking notice and there was a bit in the papers about Liverpool and Arsenal. It was just paper talk I think. Liverpool had a bid rejected but I was like I am at Forest, I am a Forest fan and want to play.”

Had Bamford remained injury-free last season, there’s no telling where the now-30-year-old attacker could be having played a huge role in getting Leeds to the Premier League in 2020.

Yet had the forward decided to move to Liverpool as a youngster, there’s every chance that Bamford would have made it at Anfield at the time.

As we know, Bamford was one of the best youngsters in England for quite some time, and at Liverpool, the attacker could have blossomed in a sensational player, especially under Jurgen Klopp.
