Having undergone extensive summer surgery, Liverpool’s midfield is looking so much better than last season.
Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have slotted in seamlessly from day one while Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo have shown that they have much to offer, too.
But according to The Athletic, Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool coaches still believe that there is something missing from the Reds midfield. Namely, one Thiago Alcantara.
Thiago hasn’t been seen at all in a Liverpool shirt since April, where he came off the bench for a cameo against West Ham United. Since then, the 32-year-old has undergone surgery, seemingly got back fit, before succumbing to another, unnamed injury.
Now reportedly expected back in the New Year, The Athletic claim that Klopp and his team how ‘discussed how beneficial Thiago’s presence in midfield would have been this season.’
The manager has reportedly been longing for the Spaniard’s ‘cunning and creativity’ in the midfield. Haven’t we all, Jurgen. Haven’t we all.
Liverpool missing Thiago
At times this season, it’s been very easy to forget completely about Liverpool’s magical No.6.
With a fresh midfield to run the rule over, it has felt very much like going from the old to the new at Anfield.
But while his former midfield partners have exited the stage, Thiago remains. Just. Although the likes of Gravenberch and Szoboszlai in particular have excited supporters, the former Barcelona man certainly still has a part to play.
Klopp recently called him ‘exceptional’ and given the way the boss speaks about Thiago, you might expect to see him as part of Liverpool’s starting midfield three when he’s finally fit.

All of that of course depends on the player himself getting up to speed. At times, it has felt like we may not ever see Thiago play for Liverpool again.
Three games shy of a century of appearances, that would be a mighty shame.
Despite summer interest in him, Thiago opted to stay at Liverpool this summer, reportedly believing he still had a big role at the club.
All that has happened since has so far prevented that from becoming a reality. But it’s nice to hear that the maestro is still in the thoughts of the coaching staff. He’ll be back, and we’ll be waiting.
