What Darwin Nunez did to the Liverpool fans after his full-time argument with Pep Guardiola

Darwin Nunez was once again a name on everyone’s lips after Liverpool’s game with Manchester City today.

More often than not of late, Nunez has been in the headlines for exactly what he should be: his goal-scoring. But today against City, the Uruguayan wasn’t quite at the races.

Instead, Darwin had tongues wagging for an apparent spat with Pep Guardiola, which was caught by the cameras at the full-time whistle.

While Liverpool fans might have a bit of fun with the little disagreement with City’s illustrious coach, they’ll love what Nunez did next, too. As seen in a post from Liverpool’s official X account, the 24-year-old headed straight for the fans.

After high-fiving Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch, Nunez claps the travelling support, as cries of ‘Nunez, Nunez, Nunez,’ fill the air.

With the crowd chanting his name, Darwin reaches for the Liverpool badge, points to it and nods enthusiastically. Raising a final thumbs up to his adoring public, the Reds No.9 is then greeted by Virgil van Dijk, who gives him a hand-shake and a pat on the shoulder.

Nunez makes headlines again

While it may not be for the reasons we’d hope, we can’t say we mind Nunez taking up a few more column inches after today’s game.

Perhaps we’ll never truly know what was said between the Uruguay international and Guardiola, but the coach had clearly done something to rub Darwin up the wrong way.

It was an indication that the Liverpool striker is still yet to fully learn how to keep his emotions in check. But it also shows just how much he loves playing for this football club.

We get that badge pointing and thumping isn’t for everyone. At times it can come off performative and almost even disingenuous.

But in Nunez’s case, you don’t get that impression at all. Instead, here is a young man who’s been through a tough time at a new club and is now embracing it fully.

Fans can see whether that is genuine or not, and in Darwin’s case you really get the sense that it is.

We do need him to reign in his emotions at times, and it should be said that he wasn’t especially good today. Nevertheless, he gives whatever he has and that’s what’s made him the fan favourite that he is.

You still never quite know what to expect from Darwin, but come rain or shine, he does love this football club. And it loves him right back.
