Jamie Carragher has given his verdict on whether Liverpool can challenge for the Premier League title.
Liverpool had a big test of their credentials this afternoon, heading to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City.
In traditionally the Reds’ hardest game of the season, Liverpool stood up well, taking home a hard-fought 1-1 draw. After 13 games, the Reds now sit just a point behind City in second place.
And asked by Sky Sports whether he now felt Jurgen Klopp’s side were genuine challengers to the champions, Carragher gave a rather on the fence verdict.
“I think they can challenge if the City we see now are the City we see for the rest of the season,” explained the former Liverpool defender. “My only fear is that I don’t think that will be the case, they’re just kicking into gear.
“I think you have to expect that, it’s the norm. That would be my worry for Liverpool and Arsenal but if they [City] don’t get out of performing how they are right now, of course Liverpool can challenge.”
Liverpool still in title picture
It’s probably true that Liverpool’s potential title challenge rests on how well City play between now and the rest of the season.
As Carragher mentions, Pep Guardiola’s side do tend to get better as campaign’s progress.
But this season they haven’t quite looked their usual selves just yet. If that continues, then this Liverpool team is capable of matching them.
The Reds aren’t the finished article just yet though, so if City end up posting a 90+ points season, it’ll be tough for them to keep up.

As seen today, Liverpool have it in them to match the Citizens if they maintain this kind of level. But anything more might be a bit of stretch.
With that in mind, you get the feeling we might see a slightly better Reds team only next season.
Nevertheless, today’s result should indicate that Liverpool are certainly back to somewhere near the level we’ve come to expect from them. If they can keep that going, they should be in the mix.
All in all, a very good day at the office for Liverpool. Plenty to look forward to.
