Pundit shares what £40m Leeds player’s Dad has just told him, after Liverpool links

Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray will not be getting carried away, despite being linked with Liverpool.

The Reds were surprisingly reported as being ready to make a move for Gray during next summer’s transfer window.

Having become a fixture in a Leeds United team gunning for promotion, the 17-year-old’s stock is on the rise. He’s even been compared to Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold. But according to former Leeds defender Aidy White, the youngster’s feet are firmly on the ground.

Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds this weekend, White says that having spoken to Gray’s Dad Andy – a former Leeds player himself – he doesn’t see Archie getting ahead of himself.

“He has got sensible people around him who have had amazing careers – his family and Dad,” says the pundit. “I spoke to his Dad. He plays everything down like he has got to improve, he will keep his head on his shoulders.

“With all these links cropping up, no doubt about it he will have his family around him and they will keep him grounded. Hopefully, for now, the right call is to stay here, play football and learn your trade here.”

Gray not getting carried away

This is a really important point that will no doubt only intrigue Jurgen Klopp even more.

Famously a manager who looks for a certain type of character in his potential signings, Klopp will appreciate that Gray has a good head on his shoulders and good people around him.

Thrown into men’s football at such a young age, it can certainly be easy to become a big time Charlie and think that you’ve ‘made it’ already.

But how many times do we see talents come through, get a big reputation, make a move and then come crashing down. It’s an incredibly well-trodden path to destruction.

With The Daily Mail putting any potential fee for Gray at as much as £40m, the midfielder’s head could start to swell. Who could blame him.

But with the right advice, that hopefully won’t happen. In that respect, it sounds like Archie is sorted. As well as his Dad, the youngster can count Leeds legend Eddie Gray as part of his wider family.

Klopp may love that, but we still don’t think it’s enough to tempt Liverpool to pay such a high fee. If Gray can go up to the Premier League with Leeds and prove himself there, then maybe he’ll become a more serious option.

If his feet are still on the ground after all of that – and he’s still with the Peacocks – then it could be time to make our move. For now, a watching brief will do.
