Liverpool should give themselves a big boost and bring 21-year-old player back to Anfield in January

Liverpool should be looking to make a slight change in personnel during the January transfer window.

January is the time for teams to assess how the season is going, and dip into the transfer market if needs be. The Reds themselves have already been linked with a number of moves in the winter.

But one man who should be on the agenda is someone Liverpool don’t actually have to buy, because they already have him – Fabio Carvalho.

Now, Carvalho didn’t have the best of times during his debut season at Anfield last year.

Having only started four Premier League games, the 21-year-old moved on to RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga for the full season.

It’s still early days for Carvalho in Germany, but early signs aren’t good. 15 games into the season, and the youngster has started just once. With prospects looking poor, Liverpool should bring him home.

Carvalho learning little in Leipzig

Given how little he’s featured for Leipzig so far, you really have to question the decision to send Carvalho out this season.

There’s nothing that he’s learning over in Germany that he wouldn’t have gained back at Liverpool.

Carvalho is still so young, and another year at Anfield would have seen him develop naturally. Now having spent time away, the former Fulham youngster will have to get used to things all over again once he returns.

That would be fine if he were playing and being involved during his spell away. But seeing as he isn’t, it’s only going to serve to damage Carvalho’s confidence further.

Last year, Liverpool were not a functioning team. It was always going to be difficult for Carvalho to find himself. Just as Harvey Elliott struggled but is now improving in a better team, Fabio would likely have done the same.

But it’s not too late. We’re sure that Liverpool will already be having conversations with Leipzig about their use of Carvalho. If things don’t improve for the former Portugal U21 international between now and the New Year, the Reds simply have to bring him back.

With Jurgen Klopp’s men still battling on four fronts, young Fabio can certainly be useful.

The manager only recently labelled Carvalho as an ‘outstanding’ prospect. The past year or so may have dampened that feeling, but Liverpool can still bring it back. Get him back home before it’s too late.
