Liverpool player states long-term career plan after rumoured summer exit

Caoimhin Kelleher has detailed his ambition to one day become a no. 1 goalkeeper after a summer where the Liverpool shot-stopper was rumoured with an Anfield exit.

Speaking to press ahead of the Reds UEFA Europa League clash tomorrow against Toulouse, the Republic of Ireland international plainly detailed his long-term career plans to become a starter.

The 24-year-old has been Alisson Becker’s backup for the last three seasons, with Kelleher strongly linked with a move away from Liverpool this summer.

However, the decision was made for the Irish talent to remain at Anfield, with Kelleher impressing for Liverpool in both the Europa League and the League Cup.

And Kelleher has now stated his intention to become a no. 1, with the Cork-bork keeper saying: “Clearly I’m still back up to Alisson at the moment.

My ambition is obviously to play as many games as I can. At the moment I’m a back up, but my ambition has always been to be number 1. Right now I’m just trying to make the most of it.”

Kelleher is clearly a talented goalkeeper with a massive future in the game, yet with Alisson as good as he is, there’s simply no chance the Irish international will replace Liverpool’s main man between the sticks.

As a result, leaving Anfield is Kelleher’s only viable option heading into 2024, with a move in the summer now a likely option for the 24-year-old.

Indeed, Kelleher is one of the best backup goalkeepers in the Premier League, but given how young he is, the shot-stopper needs to take the risk next year and leave Liverpool to become a no. 1 elsewhere.
