Liverpool were never in a negotiation to sign Son Heung-Min from Tottenham Hotspur in 2022.
The Reds have seemingly been long-term admirers of the Spurs captain, with Jurgen Klopp in particular a big fan.
And according to reports last week, that admiration almost came to fruition back in the summer of 2022. The Telegraph reported that with Spurs not guaranteed a Champions League spot, Liverpool were ‘sniffing around’ Son, and the South Korean was interested.
Now, renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has attempted to clear things up. Writing in his Daily Briefing today, Romano says that Son was ‘never’ for sale at any point during his Tottenham career.
“I saw a story about Liverpool being keen on Son Heung-min when Sadio Mane left in 2022,” began the journalist.
“But my information is that Son has never been considered for sale at Tottenham, never. Daniel Levy has always seen him as untouchable and a key player. So nothing at all happened with Liverpool or other clubs, it was never a negotiation.”
Romano rubbishes Son claims
As useful as it always is to hear from Romano in regards to transfer stories, he seems to have missed the point slightly here.
The assertion was never that Son was close to Liverpool or that they were speaking to Tottenham about him. Rather, the player himself was thinking about a move away and was considering jumping ship to Anfield.
As ever with Spurs, speaking to the player and speaking to the club are two very different things. It doesn’t sound like Liverpool ever got close to crossing the bridge of convincing Daniel Levy to part with one of his star men.
Perhaps that’s why the Reds never truly pushed for Son. It’s clear just how much Klopp rates the 31-year-old and maybe had he been elsewhere the boss would have tried harder.

But Levy is notorious for being a wily negotiator. Maybe Liverpool knew they were barking up the wrong tree from the start.
All things considered, that’s a shame for both Liverpool and Son.
Although Spurs have started the Premier League season well this time, they’re not going to win it. Already out of the Carabao Cup and not in Europe this campaign, they look set for another trophyless season.
Had he joined the Reds, Son would have had a much better chance of silverware and Liverpool would have had another top player. Oh well, some things just aren’t to be.
