Jamie Carragher shares what he thinks Liverpool are now starting to really think about Darwin Nunez

Liverpool are starting to trust Darwin Nunez as their starting striker moving forward.

Despite arriving from Benfica for big money in summer 2022, Nunez has often been in and out of the Liverpool team since then.

That continued into this season, with the Uruguayan beginning the campaign on the bench. But in the weeks and months since, Darwin has forced his way into the team.

And according to former Reds defender Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports Monday Night Football last night, Liverpool now see Nunez as their number one striker.

“I think Liverpool with Darwin Nunez are starting to feel like, yes, he’s our number nine going forward,” said the pundit.

Liverpool make Darwin decision

Prior to Sunday, it had looked pretty cut and dry that Carragher’s view is spot on. After a slightly rough start to the season, Jurgen Klopp seemed to have decided that Nunez is now the man to spearhead his best XI.

With goals and assists flowing freely, the 24-year-old appeared to have overcome the shadow of a hit and miss first year at Liverpool.

However, the draw away at Luton Town showed just why that is perhaps still up for debate.

To be fair to Carragher, he was speaking after the game on Sunday, and so doesn’t think it will affect Klopp’s thinking.

But the Uruguay international’s failure to finish some of the chances at Kenilworth Road does throw up old questions about his suitability.

For the record, we still think that Darwin is the man for Liverpool long term. But he really does need to cut out the easy misses.

The open net miss from Mohamed Salah’s accidental knock-down is unforgivable. That was the difference between Liverpool taking one point or three points. And it’s still happening too often.

Nevertheless, the good is far outweighing the bad with Nunez. As long as that remains the case, he should be allowed to keep on improving while starting for Liverpool.
