Liverpool fans could soon see a 16-year-old turning out for the senior team this season.
Since arriving from Leicester City in the summer, youngster Trey Nyoni has been making a name for himself. Only 16, Nyoni’s potential has already earned him a maiden call-up to first-team training.
And as seen on the latest ‘Inside Training’ video on Liverpool’s YouTube channel yesterday, young Trey has retained his spot alongside Liverpool’s stars.
His first call-up came ahead of the Reds’ Europa League fixture against Toulouse last week. With the teenager actually ineligible to play, there was no chance of Nyoni being in the squad for that one.
But Klopp has obviously seen something that he likes a lot. To train in Liverpool’s Europa League group is one thing, to be back in it ahead of a Premier League fixture is another entirely.
It seems highly unlikely that Nyoni will be in the squad for Sunday’s trip to Luton Town. But the young man could be seen getting on the ball and biting into tackles in the footage from yesterday’s session. Surely a debut is on the way at some point.
Nyoni keeps first-team place
Just like Ben Doak last season, Nyoni’s rise through Liverpool’s youth teams has been meteoric.
Of course, he hasn’t announced himself in the way that Doak did just yet, but a senior debut now doesn’t feel all that far away.
With so much of the season still to play, you’d imagine that if he carries on in the same way he is now, Trey will get his chance.
There shouldn’t be any rush for that, though. Liverpool are now very well stocked in terms of midfielders and in Stefan Bajcetic and Harvey Elliott they have young players to carry the torch, too.

James McConnell is another one who looks the part, so Nyoni does have plenty of competition.
Occasionally though, you get a youngster coming through who just feels special. Doak did – does – and Nyoni does as well.
Upon his signing journalist Fabrizio Romano labelled the former Leicester prospect as a ‘talented’ midfielder [Twitter]. He certainly looks to be exactly that.
With Trey now very much grabbing the attention, it won’t be long before Klopp is asked publicly about Liverpool’s latest potential star. His answer will be very interesting indeed.
