Liverpool are currently losing to RB Leipzig in race to sign ‘talented’ midfielder

Liverpool are losing out to RB Leipzig in the battle to sign Schalke wonderkid Assan Ouedraogo.

The Reds have been heavily linked with the 17-year-old Ouedraogo, who has had a breakthrough season so far in the Bundesliga 2.

But according to journalist Christian Falk, Leipzig currently have the upper hand. Writing in the Daily Briefing today, Falk gave an update on what’s going on with Ouedraogo and Liverpool.

“Talks with the talented Assan Ouedraogo from Schalke are rumoured to be taking place soon,” he says.

“However, RB Leipzig currently appear to be ahead of Liverpool when it comes to the midfielder.”

If Ouedraogo does end up joining Leipzig, then you could perhaps bet good money that it wouldn’t be the end of Liverpool’s interest in him.

The Reds famously love the Red Bull club’s way of working with and developing players in a tactical system that often mirrors their own.

Over recent years they’ve signed Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai from the Germans. Both have been big successes at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Liverpool also sent youngster Fabio Carvalho the other way on a season-long loan.

So, if the Reds are to lose out to any club for Ouedraogo, then Leipzig would probably be their preferred choice.

From there, they could keep an eye the young man’s development and see if he’s worth coming back in for in the future.

With talks reportedly taking place between Ouedraogo and Liverpool already, a relationship on the player’s side should already be there. That should allow the Reds to pick up where they left off from in the years to come.

Of course, if the teenager is as good a prospect as Liverpool seem to think he is, then they’d rather bring him in now, though. They won’t lie down and let Leipzig have a free run.
