‘Bad news’: £55m player is not interested in a move to Liverpool next year

Liverpool are unlikely to be able to convince Leroy Sane to join them next year.

Sane has been mooted as a potential signing for Liverpool in the event that Mohamed Salah leaves for Saudi Arabia. With a year left on his deal by next summer, it had seemed like a possibility.

But according to German journalist Christian Falk, Sane is now more likely to stay at Bayern Munich. Writing in the Daily Briefing today, Falk has suggested that Liverpool simply doesn’t appeal to the 27-year-old.

“More bad news for Liverpool,” says the journalist, having already relayed the news that sporting director target Max Eberl also prefers to join Bayern.

“The Reds are rumoured to be eyeing Leroy Sane as Mohamed Salah’s successor. However, I have heard that Sane’s family have finally settled in Munich and are now very happy in the city.

“A move to Liverpool seems difficult to imagine at the moment; the family would be more tempted by the metropolises of London, Madrid and Barcelona. However, an extension at FC Bayern currently seems the most likely option.”

Sane leaning towards Bayern stay

As one of the German champion’s most important players, it had always seemed a bit of a long-shot that Liverpool could have snatched Sane away.

Nevertheless, with just a year left on his contract there have been rumblings that the former Manchester City man would like a change.

If Salah really does end up leaving, then you can certainly see the appeal of Liverpool bringing in someone like Sane.

But, Bayern aren’t really in the business of losing players they’d rather keep.

We did see the Reds manage to work a way around this when signing Thiago Alcantara back in 2020, though. The Munich side were also seemingly keen to hang onto Ryan Gravenberch this summer, but he moved to Anfield, too.

So there is a precedent there. But the key thing in the cases of both Thiago and Gravenberch was that both players pushed for the move.

With Bayern eventually reluctantly agreeing to sell the pair, the players’ stance was the main driver.

In Sane’s case it sounds like that drive to get a move completed simply isn’t there. Things could still change of course, but maybe now is the time to let this one go.
