Michael Owen suggests Liverpool could soon have another ‘unbelievable’ player

Michael Owen has suggested that Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is still yet to reach his potential.

Nunez has been having a brilliant start to the season for the Reds. After bagging a screamer against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup last night, the Uruguayan has seven goals in 14 games.

Those kinds of statistics underline why Owen thinks Nunez has ‘unbelievable’ potential. But writing on Twitter this morning, the former Liverpool striker claimed that the 24-year-old is still ‘rough around the edges,’ too.

“That goal from Darwin Nunez on Tuesday [Wednesday] night sums him up at this stage of his career,” says the 43-year-old.

“There’s an unbelievable player in there somewhere but he’s still so rough around the edges.”

Ever since Nunez arrived at Liverpool from Benfica last summer, this has been a pretty consistent narrative.

For everyone can see just how good the Reds’ No.9 could one day be. Darwin has all of the ingredients to become one of the best around.

But he’s also very clearly in need of being walked through the recipe to put those ingredients together.

That’s fine, and Jurgen Klopp has reiterated as much right from Nunez’s early days at the club. He was never going to be an overnight success.

Despite that, the Uruguay striker still posted some good numbers in his debut season. 15 goals in all competitions, all from open play is an encouraging start.

This year though, things look to have clicked further for Nunez. He’s well on the way to comfortably bettering his output in 2023/24.

The latest instalment – last night’s rocket against Bournemouth – is another sign that Darwin is ready for lift off.

Now 24, he’s no longer a youngster. By the end of this season, we should start seeing this assertion that he’s still ‘rough’ or ‘raw’ come to a close.

There’s no guarantee that Nunez will start scoring goals like the one against the Cherries with regularity. But with the penny dropping more and more, we should finally get to see the player we all knew he could be consistently.
