Cody Gakpo has praised the recent impact of Liverpool teammate Darwin Nunez.
Nunez is in the middle of a good scoring run for Liverpool. Having scored in the previous two games, the 24-year-old rattled in a terrific winning goal during last night’s Carabao Cup tie with Bournemouth.
Gakpo was also on target during the game, and was asked for his thoughts on the man he shared the scoresheet with by LFCTV.
“He’s doing great,” gushed the Dutchman. “It was an amazing goal. Inside, far corner. Yeah, fantastic.”
Gakpo praises Nunez form
Gakpo is right to highlight how good his Uruguayan teammate has been recently. In fact, it’s fair to say that Nunez’s good form stretches right back to the start of the season.
It’s easy to forget given what he’s done in the months since, but Liverpool’s No.9 did actually start the campaign out of favour with Jurgen Klopp.
With others, including Gakpo preferred, Darwin had to rely on bit-part cameos to catch the manager’s attention.
But catch it he did. And although slight injury niggles have prevented him from starting every game, the former Benfica striker should now be one of the first names on the teamsheet.
In fairness to Gakpo, his form deserves a mention, too.
The Netherlands international has seemingly gone off the boil a little this season. After wowing towards the back end of the previous campaign, the 24-year-old doesn’t seem to have quite the same impact as before.
Nevertheless, his goal last night made it four in Gakpo’s last four starts.
Having failed to get off the scoresheet before September’s international break, he now has six in his last nine appearances for club and country. Six goals in six starts.
So, although he may not be catching the eye quite like before, Gakpo is perhaps now becoming more effective.
Whether it’s he, Nunez, Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota or Luis Diaz, you can bet on Liverpool’s front line being the difference right now. Long may that continue.
