Liverpool insiders reportedly believe that Manchester United made a mistake this summer in signing Mason Mount.

According to journalist James Pearce, Liverpool were never going to match Chelsea’s £60m valuation for the England international, with the Reds only wanting to pay £40m for Mount.

With the midfielder also preferring a move to Old Trafford, Liverpool were seemingly doomed from the start in their bid to sign Mount. Yet the Anfield side now think the decision to pull out was a good one.

Pearce said when asked about Liverpool’s interest this summer in Mount: “The way things turned out with Mount look like a blessing in disguise.

“Liverpool were very keen on Mount, but after a pursuit that went on for a while, Mount made it known that United was his destination of choice. It wasn’t as simple as that because the numbers involved in the deal, Liverpool wouldn’t have got involved anyway.

“They valued Mount at around £40m, and United paid £60m and wages on £250k-a-week plus. Those numbers, Liverpool wouldn’t have got to.”

With Liverpool striking gold this summer in Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, ending their interest in Mount was arguably the best thing the Reds did all summer.

The England international has struggled at United with injuries whilst Liverpool’s new signings have shot the Anfield side up the Premier League standings into the top-four.

Having overhauled their midfield, Liverpool can feel proud of their summer business, and dropping their interest in Mount was key in the Reds getting to where they are now.
