Yaya Toure has said Mohamed Salah’s solo effort against Watford for Liverpool in the 2021/22 would have made Lionel Messi proud.

Speaking on the Match of the Day Africa podcast, the former Manchester City star named Salah’s strike against the Hornets as one of the best goals ever scored by an African player in the Premier League.

Picking the ball up from near Watford’s area, Salah’s close control took out three Watford defenders before the winger smashed the ball past Ben Foster in what was to be a 5-0 win for Liverpool.

Indeed, Salah is no stranger to scoring wonder goals, with the winger infamously winning then 2018 Puskas Award for his 11th best goal that season. Yet Toure thinks Messi would be proud of this one.

The pundit said: “Mo Salah vs Watford in 2021/22, he scored a similar goal like that against Man City at Anfield.

“If he was Messi people would say, he’s just a top player you know. When you go one vs one when you put the engine’s on and you dribble one after another etcetera, you know what I mean?”

The variety of Salah’s goals since joining Liverpool for £34m in 2017 has been nothing short of incredible, and Messi would be proud of most of them.

From mazy runs to thunderbolt strikes from way out, Salah’s goals have been huge for Liverpool in becoming one of the best clubs in the world under Jurgen Klopp.

And the winger’s technically genius strike against Watford two years ago is one of the best of the bunch, with Toure rightly giving Salah his flowers for that strike at Vicarage Road.
