Owen Hargreaves has made a comparison that ‘Liverpool fans won’t like’ about Ryan Gravenberch.
Gravenberch has come into his own in recent weeks. Having chalked up back-to-back Premier League starts this weekend, the Dutchman’s influence for the Reds is growing.
Speaking on The Kelly & Wrighty Show on Optus Sports yesterday, Hargreaves acknowledged as much. But in doing so, the former Manchester United midfielder made a potentially unflattering claim about Gravenberch.
“He has played amazing (in the Europa League) and because he has played well there, then he gets the opportunity to play in the Premier League,” began the pundit, so far so good.
“He reminds me, Liverpool fans won’t like this, but he is [Paul] Pogba-esque. He can do a lot of good stuff. He can play in a lot of positions. He has a great size. Great athleticism.
“But I think he is one of those players you will need to specialise in a position, but so far, I love watching him. I am amazed he didn’t play more for Bayern because I think he is going to be a good addition to their midfield.”
Hargreaves makes Gravenberch claim
In reality, there’s no need for Liverpool supporters to be at all upset with what Hargreaves is saying here.
Although he eventually turned into something of an expensive flop for United – and has become a bit of a tragic figure back at Juventus – there was a time where Pogba was considered one of the best players in the world.
The reasons for that are all of the things Hargreaves lists as qualities that Gravenberch has, too.
At his best, Pogba could absolutely dominate any game. Big, strong, technical, goal-scoring, defensively sound, the Frenchman was everything you’d want in a midfielder.

There’s a reason United once paid a world-record fee for him. His fall from grace in the years since shouldn’t mask that completely.
In fairness to Pogba, he did also manage to scale the highest of heights during his career.
If you offered Gravenberch a goal-scoring turn in a victorious World Cup final, then he’d probably snap your hand off.
But, given what has happened to Pogba outside of that glory in Russia five years ago, Liverpool fans will be hoping their new No.38 doesn’t end up going the same way.
