Manchester City have reportedly placed a £50m asking price on Kalvin Phillips despite the rumoured Liverpool target playing just six times this season.

According to the Mirror, the reigning Premier League champions want to sell the England international for a profit this January, even with Phillips being a benchwarmer during his entire career with City.

Since joining the English giants last year, the 27-year-old has made just 27 appearances in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side, with Liverpool now linked with a move for Phillips.

The Reds are keen to sign a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window, with Phillips now emerging as a top target for Liverpool.

Yet after this update, there’s every chance that Jurgen Klopp’s side could now pull out of the race for Phillips, with £50m simply too much for a player with just six appearances all season.

Indeed, the midfielder could be a good addition if the price tag was dramatically lower, yet Liverpool are aware that they can find a cheaper option in the market than Phillips.

Phillips needs a move away from City in January, yet the club are doing themselves no favours in demanding so much for the midfield outcast.

And for Liverpool, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the Reds decided to scrap their own plans to sign Phillips, with City’s demands simply too high given how little the midfielder has played.

With other targets out there, Liverpool won’t be too worried if their pursuit for Phillips stops here, with younger and cheaper options expected to be available in January.
