Liverpool are considering a move to sign out-of-favour Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen.

Maatsen has only played 84 minutes of Premier League football this season, although has featured in six of Chelsea’s nine matches so far.

After coming so close to joining Burnley this summer, TeamTALK report that the 21-year-old has now decided to leave Stamford Bridge in January.

Burnley and Vincent Kompany are reportedly still keen to bring him back to Turf Moor after a successful loan spell last year. But Maatsen reportedly sees the Clarets as being a ‘no-go’ destination and would rather stay at a ‘top’ club.

As a result, Liverpool are claimed to be in the mix. Jurgen Klopp is said to be keen to ‘add more quality’ at left-back and sees Maatsen as a potential option.

Manchester City are reportedly hovering, too. City are claimed to have spoken with the Dutchman about a move in July and would be open to returning to the table.

Liverpool looking at Maatsen

Recent injury to Andy Robertson has put the spotlight on Liverpool’s current left-back situation.

For so many years, Robertson has made conversations about potential signings in the position completely redundant. Kostas Tsimikas was brought in as a necessary back-up over three years ago, and there has been no need to discuss anything else since.

But with Robertson turning 30 in five months and Tsimikas not kicking on as expected, Liverpool do need to start thinking about this now.

They do have youngsters coming through who could be future starters. There are high hopes for both Luke Chambers and Calum Scanlon.

But Maatsen would surely be a step up from either academy player.

Described as a ‘top player’ by his former manager at Coventry City, Mark Robins, [Coventry Telegraph] the Chelsea man has real potential.

A Dutch U21 international, Maatsen looks set to be in the full squad before too long and appears destined to be a Premier League starter.

If Liverpool think he can be Robertson’s eventual successor, they’re going to have to move quickly in the New Year.
