Gary Neville has jokingly claimed that Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister is the best Premier League midfielder not playing for a top-six side.

Taking to Twitter, the former Manchester United named the former Brighton & Hove Albion star as the best midfielder not playing for one of England’s elite.

In a move that’s likely to bait out Jamie Carragher, Mac Allister has been impressive for Liverpool since making the £35m move to Anfield this summer.

The Argentine international is adapting to a new deeper role under Jurgen Klopp, though it is one that Mac Allister is learning more about with each passing game.

Indeed, the midfielder could have been the best in his position outside the top-six had he stayed at Brighton, yet at Liverpool, Mac Allister is now amongst players who are certainly on his level.

Neville’s Mac Allister claim is childish yet funny

In an industry as serious as itself as football, we can all do with a lighthearted piece of punditry now and again, something that Neville has delivered with this morning.

As stated earlier, this tweet from the Sky Sports pundit was likely made to annoy his colleague Carragher, who by now could already have a witty response on Twitter.

Mac Allister too could see the funny side, with the midfielder still learning the ropes at Liverpool despite impressing for the Reds in recent weeks after a rocky start to life at Anfield.
