Liverpool supporters now have themselves a new hero, just two months into the new season.

Having seen legends like Roberto Firmino and Jordan Henderson depart over the summer, Reds supporters are getting used to a brand spanking new team.

To some, that will feel strange as the old guard are replaced by younger models. But according to Jermaine Pennant for Mirror Football, one player in particular has already made supporters forget about their old heroes: Dominik Szoboszlai

“Szoboszlai’s came in he’s got the No.8 jersey, big, big boots to fill with Steven Gerrard’s number,” says the former Liverpool winger.

“But he’s quickly becoming a fans favourite with his energy, passing range, the goals he scores, he runs around non-stop. A fantastic addition to that midfield.”

Fans fall for Szobo

On the day of his 23rd birthday, it’s only right for us to pen an ode to Szoboszlai.

Few players have hit the ground running quite so comfortably at Liverpool. But, the ones that have tend to go on to do great things.

To know that, Szoboszlai need only look around at his teammates. Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah. All players who bedded in instantly at Anfield and became legends over time.

Not to put too much pressure on the Hungarian, but he has the feel of someone who could have a similar trajectory at the club.

These things don’t happen by accident or inevitably, though. The 23-year-old will have to put in plenty of work to get to anything like the level of Alisson, Van Dijk or Salah. But, from everything we’ve seen of him so far, Szoboszlai will get through that work happily.

Because of that, you get the impression that the fun has only just started for Liverpool fans where their new No.8 is concerned. It was pretty much love at first sight between Dom and the Kop. Thankfully though, this romance is only just beginning.
