Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, with the England international likely to leave the Blues in 2024.

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Jurgen Klopp’s side are the latest Premier League club to register an interest in the 23-year-old, with Tottenham also chasing Gallagher’s signature.

Named as Chelsea captain on numerous occasions this season by Mauricio Pochettino, Gallagher has endured a mixed spell with the west London side since breaking into the senior team last campaign.

And for Liverpool, there could be an opportunity to bring the midfielder to Anfield if Chelsea are open to selling Gallagher next year, a prospect that could well happen.

Indeed, with Klopp keen on adding more English players to his ranks, Gallagher, lauded as ‘outstandng’ by Thomas Tuchel, would tick a few boxes for Liverpool this January.

However, given what the Reds actually need, a move to sign the Three Lions star might be a poor one from Liverpool, who clearly need a defensive-minded midfielder.

Liverpool should only consider Gallagher as a last resort

Gallagher is a solid Premier League player who can do a job for almost every club in the division, but for what Liverpool are looking for, there are better options out there in the market.

Defending is hardly Gallagher’s specialty, and whilst the midfielder might develop well under Klopp, the German manager needs a natural anchor-man this January.

Whilst the signing of Gallagher wouldn’t be bad, it would certainly be underwhelming, and Liverpool fans would expect a more suitable addition in January than the Chelsea academy product.
