Micah Richards says £34m Liverpool player put in one of his worst ever performances on Saturday

Mohamed Salah had one of his worst games of all-time in Saturday’s Merseyside Derby.

Although he ended up being the eventual match-winner, it wasn’t a vintage performance from Salah against Everton. Nevertheless, the Egyptian still ended up grabbing the only two goals of the match.

And speaking about Salah on 5 Live’s The Monday Night Club last night, Micah Richards claims it’s ‘staggering’ how Liverpool’s No.11 can still score so supremely, having played so poorly.

“How good is Mo Salah, seriously!?” posed the former Manchester City defender. “That was one of the worst games I’ve seen him play the other day.

“He was trying to take people on, it wasn’t working, dribbling wasn’t great, trying to make runs, wasn’t really coming off. But then strokes the penalty home like he’s got the most confidence ever.

“Then on the counter-attack he’s just so cool in-front of goal. He’s so so good in-front of goal, it’s staggering. For a player not to be playing well and just find the net like he does, I just think he’s an outstanding player.

“He’s so consistent with scoring goals, maybe not playing the best every single week but scoring goals. Wow, what a player.”

Salah still finds the net

Having been in tremendous form of late, you’d have fancied Salah against Everton on Saturday.

Like he does against most Premier League teams, the £34m man has a brilliant record when facing Liverpool’s city rivals. But as Richards says, it just wasn’t happening for him at the weekend.

Usually so threatening even when not all that involved, Mo didn’t really look like making anything happen at any point.

And then, in a flash, he’s added two more goals to a Liverpool tally which now stands just six shy of 200.

Of course, it did help that Salah was given the opportunity to score from the penalty spot. The way he was playing, that was the only chance he was getting of opening the scoring.

But as we’ve seen a couple of times of late, the poor display could have affected his precision from 12 yards. No such luck for Everton, it was one of the most coolly dispatched penalties we’ll see all season.

And then, with Darwin Nunez unselfishly laying him in, Mo kept his head to finish superbly on the counter-attack. The difference between good and great players is that the great ones make a difference even when they’re below-par. Thankfully, we’ve got one of the very greatest wearing Liverpool red.
