Liverpool are reportedly ‘obsessed’ with signing 21-year-old player who Alexis Mac Allister really rates

Reported Liverpool transfer target Ezequiel Fernandez has already received a stamp of approval from Alexis Mac Allister.

Fernandez has emerged as a potential transfer target for the Reds this week. Reports from Italy have suggested that Liverpool are in fact ‘obsessed’ with the idea of signing the Boca Juniors midfielder [Gazzetta dello Sport].

To plenty of supporters, Fernandez will be a completely new name. But thankfully, Mac Allister has already provided some background.

Speaking to Argentine outlet TyC Sports back in March, Liverpool’s No.10 claimed that the 21-year-old is primed for a move to Europe. Where he’d once recommend Fernandez to Brighton, perhaps he’s now in the ear of the Reds recruitment team, too.

“If you ask me a little more about my style, there’s one player I like a lot and that’s Equi Fernandez,” Mac Allister said. “He’s a player who has all the conditions to get to Europe one day and hopefully it can be given to him.

“He’s a player I like a lot, he understands the game a lot. He’s always ready to receive the ball, he plays with both feet, he can play as a five, as a midfielder.

“He’s a player who has very good conditions and, if Brighton ask me, I would say his name.”

Mac Allister makes recommendation

Given the way Brighton operate with transfers, it’s highly likely that they wouldn’t need a recommendation from Alexis. In South America in particular, the Seagulls are usually ahead of the game. Mac Allister himself is proof of that.

Nevertheless, the World Cup winner is no longer playing on the South Coast. And if Liverpool were to go head-to-head with Brighton for Fernandez, perhaps Alexis’ presence at Anfield could tip the balance.

In actual fact, the Reds shouldn’t need him to. There is still a spot potentially open as Liverpool’s long-term holding midfielder.

If a player like Fernandez is brought in in January, the inference will be that he has that spot. That’s a huge incentive for a young player.

Of course it would also be a big step up, though. And like Mac Allister did, perhaps a move to a more middling club would be wise before moving to Anfield.

As a result, we’d suggest that the more experienced Andre Trindade is the more likely to come straight from South America to Liverpool.

The Reds will get a chance to weigh them both up next weekend. Fernandez’s Boca will take on Andre’ Fluminense in the Copa Libertadores final a week on Saturday. Reds scouts, be there or be square.
