Chris Sutton shares who he now thinks is more likely to win the title – Liverpool or Arsenal

BBC pundit Chris Sutton has weighed in on whether Liverpool can mount a serious title challenge this season.

The Reds continued their good start to the campaign on Saturday, beating Everton 2-0 in the Merseyside Derby. After nine games, Jurgen Klopp’s side are fourth in the table, three points off leaders Tottenham, and one behind both Arsenal and Manchester City.

This has led to claims that Liverpool could be back to being challengers this season. And asked that very question on 5 Live’s Monday Night Club last night, Sutton said that he expected the Reds to be right up there once again.

“Yeah [they are title contenders]. Just because of the midfield players they’ve brought in, but the rotation they’ve had in the forward areas, they never leave Salah out but they’ve got so many good options,” raved the pundit.

“I’m still slightly worried about them defensively. But I was at the Etihad at the weekend and Manchester City were brilliant in the first half but they’re looking a little bit vulnerable.

“I think Liverpool will be a bigger challenger to Manchester City than Arsenal this season, I really do.”

Still early days of course, but Sutton won’t be the only one quietly confident of a Liverpool charge.

Sutton backs Liverpool for title battle

After the debacle that was last season, it would be brilliant to see Liverpool back in the mix this year.

City will always be the yardstick, that goes without saying, but Sutton is right to compare the Reds to last year’s runners-up, Arsenal.

The Gunners have once again started the season well. A recent win against City will certainly give them hope that they can go one better this year.

But Mikel Arteta’s side don’t quite look like the winning machine they were in the early part of last season.

Yes, they beat City, but there’s also a slight fragility to them that wasn’t there for much of the previous campaign.

Liverpool have weaknesses too, that must be said. Sutton is right to point out that the Reds aren’t quite perfect defensively, but with a clean sheet on the board this weekend, perhaps things are starting to click there. If the Reds can sort that out, then their firepower up top will be too much for most teams to handle.

City are the team to beat, there’s no getting away from that. But finish above Arsenal, and Liverpool will have a real shot.
