Barry Lewtas has lauded James McConnell after an incredible weekend saw the youngster feature on Liverpool’s bench in the Merseyside Derby as well as star for the U-21s.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Reds youth coach was full of praise for the 19-year-old midfielder, who enjoyed arguably the best few days of his professional career to date.

McConnell was named on Liverpool’s bench for their clash against Everton, with the teenager the next day then scoring for the U-21s in their 1-1 Premier League International Cup draw with Benfica.

Indeed, it’s been quite the week for McConnell, and Lewtas has lauded the Liverpool teenager after a memorable few days for the young midfielder.

Lewtas said on McConnell’s week: “Unbelievable! For James to be on the bench at Anfield in the Merseyside derby and then start for us, I thought he did ever so well and took his goal well.

“He is showing us lots of different things to his game this year, playing as a No.6, scoring headers. It just goes to show what he can do.”

And with the Reds back in action this week in the UEFA Europa League, there’s every chance that McConnell will feature for Jurgen Klopp’s side in Europe.

The youngster was one of the standout names in pre-season this summer, and having been named in the first-team squad against Everton, McConnell could soon be about to fulfil his Liverpool dream.
