Alan Shearer has detailed why Liverpool’s defence could stop them from winning the Premier League title this season.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the pundit claimed that the Reds’ backline has looked out of sorts this season, with depth proving to be an issue.

Andy Robertson was last week ruled out for three months due to a shoulder injury, whilst Liverpool’s defensive record in the Premier League has looked questionable at best.

And Shearer thinks this will be an issue, with the England legend saying: “I think they are always going to score with the talent they have up top, I don’t think goals will ever be a problem to them.

“My slight concern would be defensively at the minute. I know they have had an injury to Robertson as well now and Tsimikas came in yesterday and got taken off.

“I still think they are a bit iffy defensively but without doubt they have improved and I think they will give it a right good go for the title.”

Liverpool arguably made a risk this summer in focusing all their attention on rehauling the midfield rather than adding something to their defence.

Depth is needed in the area if the Reds are to make an honest attempt of the Premier League title, and January will be a massive month for Liverpool in this regard.

Indeed, Liverpool’s forward options are some of the best in world football, and having similar quality in defence could make Jurgen Klopp’s side unbeatable.
