Former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin has shared the two players he’d love to coach one day.

Sahin was only at Anfield for a short time back in 2012 but he made his mark, scoring three times in just 12 appearances.

Now 35 and retired, the former Real Madrid man is beginning his first managerial job, as head coach at Turkish Super Lig side Antalyaspor.

And speaking to Flashscore about his move into coaching, Sahin was asked to name the players he’d most like to manage. Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister, take note.

“Ah, tough one. Let’s say Frenkie de Jong,” he replied. “I love this guy. He’s brilliant to watch and I like him a lot. Another one would be Alexis Mac Allister. He’s playing with his brain a lot.”

Interesting choices from Sahin, who also says he has ambitions of managing the world’s best.

“Of course, (Erling) Haaland, (Kylian) Mbappe…” he admitted. “But that would mean I must get to their level, not them coming to me!”

Maybe one day, Nuri, keep working!

Sahin lays out coaching ambitions

With all of the focus squarely on Xabi Alonso right now, some may have missed another former Liverpool midfielder going into management.

Okay, Sahin doesn’t have anything like the legacy Alonso does at Anfield, but this is still one to watch.

The former Turkey international played under some top managers during his career, including Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund.

Sahin was a key part of Klopp’s team that won the league title in 2010/11, later returning to Signal Iduna Park under Jurgen in 2013.

The 35-year-old also worked with Jose Mourinho at Madrid and later Thomas Tuchel at Dortmund. Given all of that, it’s no surprise to see him head into coaching.

Always seeming like a thoughtful and classy footballer, it’s also no surprise to see Sahin name Liverpool’s No.10 as a favourite of his. They’re cut from the same cloth.

As Liverpool start to tentatively ponder what comes after Klopp, Alonso is the one taking the headlines. But if Sahin kicks on and gets a decent move in the meantime, he’s well worth keeping track of.
