Luis Diaz has detailed what he and Darwin Nunez have been talking about before facing each other this week.

Colombia take on Uruguay in World Cup qualifying on Thursday, with both sides looking for their second win out of the campaign.

It’ll be the first time Diaz and Nunez have faced off since the Reds took on Benfica in the Champions League back in early 2022. And speaking to Colombian outlet El Heraldo, Liverpool’s No.7 shared what he and his good friend Darwin have been discussing.

“We didn’t manage to place bets, we were about to,” laughed the 26-year-old.

“We talked a lot, we played [joked] on the plane quite a bit. Most of all we talked about the match being difficult. We joked that ‘you were going to lose’, and so on. We wish each other the best and that the best will win.”

With temperatures soaring in Barranquilla, it will be a change from the Merseyside weather for both players. Asked how Nunez plans to cope with this, Diaz suggested his teammate will be ready.

“He knows that the heat issue is tough, that it’s strong to play in that schedule,” said the Colombian. “He took well what I told him about the temperature and now it’s time for the best to win. We are going to go looking for the result.”

Diaz ready to face Darwin

Being up opposite ends of the pitch, it’s unlikely that Diaz and Nunez will come into direct competition too often on Thursday.

But it will still be interesting to see which of Liverpool’s South American attacking stars comes out on top.

Although he started the season very well, Diaz has slightly dipped off in recent weeks. Of course, he had a lovely goal incorrectly chalked off against Tottenham Hotspur, but after scoring in the opening two Premier League matches, he doesn’t have a goal in the six games since.

Nunez on the other hand has grown into the campaign after a slow start. But having also looked on the verge of exploding just weeks ago, the 24-year-old is without a goal in his past three appearances.

So, as Liverpool fans watch on for Thursday’s big game, they’ll be hoping that can change for both players.

Nunez was in great form last time out for his country, while Diaz was also hailed as Colombia’s outstanding player.

It’ll be nice and novel to see the two good friends cross swords this week. Hopefully both can do well, and most importantly, come back to Liverpool fit and healthy.
