Luis Diaz made a few surprising selections when asked to name his all-time Liverpool five-a-side team.

Having been signed almost two years ago now, Diaz appears to be fully acclimatised to the club. So much so that he included several players in his dream team who were before his time at Anfield.

There were no real surprises with the first two names out of the hat, as Diaz selected teammates Alisson Becker as his goalkeeper and Virgil van Dijk as the defender. Steven Gerrard came next, in another fairly easy pick from the 26-year-old.

But that’s when things took a surprising turn. Instead of picking Mohamed Salah, or perhaps Sadio Mane, Diaz chose former Red Xherdan Shaqiri as his fourth player. In another slightly surprise pick, the Liverpool No.7 picked the great Kenny Dalglish to finish off his team. Interesting choices, Lucho!

Diaz makes surprise Shaqiri choice

There’s no easy explanation as to why Diaz thinks Shaqiri is one of Liverpool’s best players of all-time.

The Swiss is doubtless a fine forward, and had some brilliant moments during his all-too-short time with the club.

But just look at the raft of players Diaz could have picked instead. Having already chosen two of his current teammates in the team, it’s bizarre that he didn’t go for the easy choice and pick Salah.

Maybe Diaz simply thought Shaqiri was a better fit in this particular side. But you can’t imagine the £13m signing from Stoke City would be better at linking up with Gerrard and Dalglish than Salah.

Even if Diaz had picked himself, it would have perhaps been a less debatable selection.

Nevertheless, it’s nice to see Shaq get some recognition. The 31-year-old has fallen off the radar a little since leaving Liverpool in 2021. He’s doing well with Chicago Fire though, and was always an underrated member of the Reds Premier League and Champions League winning squad.

Perhaps he was never truly utilised as well as he might have been by Jurgen Klopp. In a parallel universe where Shaqiri did realise his full potential at Anfield, Diaz’s selection here could make all the sense in the world.
