Mark Clattenburg has detailed how officials got almost everything wrong in ruling out Luis Diaz’s goal for Liverpool against Tottenham.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the former Premier League referee revealed that assistant referee Adrian Holmes should have been shouting ‘offiside’ after raising his flag on Diaz.

However, communications were broken down and such a call wasn’t made, with VAR later showing that the Liverpool winger was clearly onside by some inches.

Clattenburg said: “As a former TMO, his every word was broadcast live, and Howard Webb has been striving for his Premier League officials to make their messages clear and concise.

“But there was a total breakdown in basic communication at Tottenham on Saturday. Assistant Adrian Holmes should have been shouting ‘offside, offside’ after raising his flag against Luis Diaz.

“Referee Simon Hooper should have been relaying that to the players, too. All this should have been picked up by their earpieces and heard by VAR Darren England and his assistant Dan Cook at Stockley Park.

Officials need to learn basic lessons from Tottenham – Liverpool

Referees can sometimes be given the benefit of the doubt, but there’s simply no defending what the officials did this weekend in Tottenham’s clash against Liverpool.

VAR somehow missed an obvious goal for seemingly no real reason, and officials need to be learning basic lessons over what happened in north London.

Liverpool won’t be handed any points in return, but the lessons learnt will be massive in ensuring such a stupid error can’t be made again.
