Steve Nicol has slammed Joe Gomez’s performance for Liverpool this weekend in their 2-1 loss to Tottenham.
Speaking on ESPN, the pundit was seemingly dumbfounded by the 26-year-old defender’s display for the Reds, with Gomez mainly at fault for Tottenham’s opening goal in north London.
Things didn’t get much better for Gomez from there on, with the Reds conceding a 96th-minute own goal to hand Spurs the win and doom Liverpool to their first loss of the season.

Whilst Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal and Liverpool’s two sending offs were the major talking points, Gomez’s performance has now come under the microscope.
And Nicol has now slammed the defender for his display against Tottenham, with the ESPN pundit fuming with what he saw from the Liverpool star.
Nicol said: “The first one’s just terrible defending. I mean, he’s so far wide Gomez, sleeping. He just got every single thing wrong about it.”
Gomez knows he let Liverpool down yesterday

Gomez’s performances for Liverpool in recent seasons have always swung between the incredible to the downright indefensible, and the defender was in the latter yesterday.
The 26-year-old knows that his poor judgement and positioning was the main reason why Liverpool took the lead, and Gomez’s failure to recover was evident as the match progressed.
Indeed, Gomez has had quite a lot on his plate in recent weeks with Trent Alexander-Arnold out injured, and the defender finally hit his limit in north London.
