Jermain Defoe has slammed Diogo Jota after the Liverpool attacker received a red card in the Reds’ 2-1 loss to Tottenham.

Speaking on Premier League Productions, the former Spurs superstar slammed the Portuguese international after Jota saw red after picking up two yellow cards against Tottenham.

Having already gone down to 10 men after Curtis Jones’ sending-off in the first half, Jota also receiving his marching orders was another game-changer for Liverpool in the worst possible sense.

And Defoe has slammed Jota for getting himself a red card, which potentially led to Tottenham finding the extra willpower late on in the match to score a late winner against Liverpool.

Defoe said: “If a young player did that, even then you would be thinking ’just keep your head. You are on a yellow card. Don’t do anything silly to let your teammates down’. You just couldn’t understand why.

“You lose the ball there. Don’t go to ground if you are on a yellow card, especially when you are down to ten. After that, you thought ‘Tottenham would get another chance’ and they did, which led to the three points.”

Jota’s dismissal was one of many massive talking points in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Tottenham, yet it’s one that Defoe hits the nail on the head on.

Tottenham took full advantage of the two-man advantage, and Jota knows he massively let down Liverpool in one of their biggest matches of the season.

Indeed, the £40m attacker will take some key lessons from his red card, and Jota knows he let his side down after such a massive error late on against Tottenham.
