Liverpool star says he’s now playing completely differently to what he used to

Wataru Endo has outlined how his role at Liverpool is different to what he’s been used to previously.

Endo has had a steady start to his Reds career since his surprise arrival in the summer. But after some expected teething problems, last night showcased his best performance at Liverpool so far.

As well as dominating the Leicester City midfield, especially in the second-half, the 30-year-old even grabbed a first assist for the Reds. And looking back on the game with The Athletic, Endo explained that he’s still getting to grips with what Jurgen Klopp wants from him.

“The system is different, the game is faster and my position here is a little bit higher than it was,” said the Japan captain.

“The manager doesn’t want me to just stay in front of the defenders. I have to go higher and try to get the ball all the time.

“Here we have to win every game but I don’t feel pressure as a result of that. I am humble but I have the mentality that I’m here because they believe in me. It’s exciting to be a part of it.

“This is my dream and I’m enjoying it. We have done great so far.”

You have to really credit Endo, it’s great to hear some honesty about his adaptation period at Liverpool.

From watching the former Stuttgart man, it’s clear that he’s still getting used to playing in a team that are expected to win every game.

Having never played for a top side, that’s totally understandable. And it’s clear why a defensive midfielder for Liverpool plays in a different way to a defensive midfielder for a mid-lower table team.

It took Fabinho – a league winner and Champions League semi-finalist with Monaco – a fair while to adjust to the demands Klopp placed on him.

Once he got it, the Brazilian never looked back.

At 30, it’s perhaps unlikely that Endo will ever grow into the role in the manner that Fabinho eventually did. But the signs were there last night that it’s beginning to click for the Japanese.

If he can master what Klopp wants from him, he’s going to become an incredibly useful option. Clearly intelligent, diligent and professional, you just know Endo’s going to give it his all either way.
