The defender was last year heavily criticised for some performances, yet Gomez has really turned a corner this season, and Van Dijk has been impressed.

The Liverpool captain said about Gomez: “Joey G [Gomez] has come in and played a couple of positions unbelievably well and with zero fuss.

“I love this. Not only does it bring even more competition for places, it gives us the chance to change games when we need to because it gives us different qualities at different times.”

Gomez has been one of the surprises of the season for Liverpool and a key reason why the Reds find themselves as high in the Premier League standings as they do now.

And Van Dijk’s comments will only elevate Gomez’s performances, with the defender expected to start again for Liverpool this weekend in north London against Tottenham.

The former Charlton Athletic star is on his way to becoming his best at Liverpool, and with Van Dijk’s confidence, the sky is the limit for Gomez once again.
