Liverpool made a call to Sofyan Amrabat just after missing out on Moises Caicedo this summer.
Having lost out to Chelsea for both Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, the Reds were badly in need of a midfield signing. News emerged yesterday that although they ended up with Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo, Liverpool were ‘a whisker away’ from signing Amrabat.
The Moroccan eventually joined Manchester United, who’s fans are no doubt rejoicing in supposedly beating Liverpool to the player. However, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing, they needn’t celebrate too hard.

Romano claims that although the Reds did put in a call to Amrabat, it never actually went any further.
“I’ve been asked about some reports of Liverpool coming very close to signing the Moroccan midfielder [Amrabat] this summer,” reports the journalist.
“From what I know, there was just a call from Liverpool in the summer right after the Moises Caicedo story to ask for conditions of Amrabat deal and then nothing else. It was not even a negotiation, just a request and then they moved on different targets.
“I think there’s no need to compare as in that position they preferred Wataru Endo, so their choice was clear.”
Liverpool made Amrabat call
Liverpool’s tentative interest in Amrabat has not been a secret. It was reported that the Reds were keen to bring him in as far back as last winter.
However, you get the feeling that if Liverpool had really wanted the 27-year-old, they would have got him.
Since signing for United, Amrabat has been at pains to point out just how much he wanted his Old Trafford move. But had the Reds pushed decisively, surely they’d have come away with their man.

As it was, it appears that Liverpool simply weren’t convinced that Amrabat was the right signing. There are decent arguments for that.
On the flip-side though, when you consider that it’s a loan move, for a player proven at a good level in a position Jurgen Klopp badly needed, Liverpool could have done a lot worse. The United man was described as ‘exceptional’ during last year’s World Cup [TalkSPORT]. He does have pedigree.
For that reason, there are surely plenty of fans who would have rather seen Amrabat brought in over Endo.
Nevertheless, we are where we are. Endo is a Liverpool player and Amrabat is now turning out for our arch-rivals. Time will tell whether that was the right decision. For now though, let’s get behind our man.
