Jamie Carragher shares which Liverpool teammate he almost had a fight with on the pitch

Jamie Carragher says he was forced to apologise after almost getting into an on-pitch fight with a Liverpool teammate.

The former Reds vice-captain was a famously combustible figure for Liverpool. Never one to shy away from speaking his mind, Carragher ruffled a few feathers throughout his time at Anfield.

But according to the man himself, he upset few like he upset Spanish right-back Alvaro Arbeloa. Speaking on The Overlap today, the Liverpool legend recalled the time he and Arbeloa almost ‘came to blows.’

“I had a couple of times where I had to apologise in-front of the dressing room,” admitted the 45-year-old. “I nearly had a fight on the pitch with my own teammate, Arbeloa.

“I had to go in and apologise after the game. He was going forward too much, I needed protection!

“We nearly came to blows on the pitch, then after the game you think ‘oh it was a bit much that.’ I tried to apologise after the game, he sort of threw his hand, so you lose your head again a little bit but the next day the manager said, ‘no, you’ve got to apologise in-front of all the team.’ Sometimes you’ve just got to say ‘sorry’ and move on and forget it.

“Sometimes you might not fully believe in it but at the end of the day he’s the manager, he’s your boss.”

Carragher recalls Arbeloa argument

It’s probably a coincidence that Arbeloa left Liverpool very shortly after the incident Carragher is referring to. Although given the former centre-back’s influence during his time at the club, you can’t be sure.

Either way, Arbeloa didn’t let it affect him. The full-back moved on to Real Madrid, winning two Champions Leagues as well as the World Cup and two European Championships with Spain.

Having now retired from playing, the 40-year-old has even been mooted as a potential candidate for the managerial job at Madrid.

Should he ever land himself a top job, or come back to the Premier League, it would be interesting to hear Carragher’s analysis of him.

By the sounds of things, it was more or less put to bed by the manager at the time, Rafa Benitez.

But footballers have long memories for this kind of thing. It’s unlikely that Arbeloa will have forgotten his skirmish with Bootle’s finest.

In more recent memory, James Milner and Virgil van Dijk had a little disagreement at Old Trafford last season. Thankfully though, scenes of this kind are incredibly rare to see.
