Kostas Tsimikas says Liverpool star convinced him to sign new contract

Kostas Tsimikas has said Virgil van Dijk convinced the Liverpool defender to sign a new contract, alongside Mohamed Salah.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website having put pen to paper on a fresh deal, the Greek international revealed that the 32-year-old defender was key in Tsimikas extending his stay at Liverpool.

The left-back said when talking about his relationship with Salah: “I always speak to him [Salah] about everything. He always convinced me and the captain also convinced me to sign.”

Lauded as ‘massive’ by former Chelsea captain Gary Cahill, Van Dijk has emerged as one of the most important figures at Anfield, with the defender’s influence only growing since being named skipper.

And it appears that the Dutch international is already using his power within the dressing room for good, with Van Dijk seemingly playing a key role in Tsimikas signing his new contract.

Indeed, the Greek Scouser could play a massive part for the Reds this season, especially in the UEFA Europa League, and Van Dijk has now got his wish in Tsimikas extending his stay on Merseyside.

Tsimikas was part of a group of players who Liverpool could have looked at moving on this summer, though this contract decision has put any speculation over a potential exit firmly in the coffin.

The Greek international has impressed whenever given the chance at Anfield, and as a fan favourite amongst Liverpool supporters, Tsimikas will want to do the club well.

Moreover, Van Dijk’s persuasion in Tsimikas staying with Liverpool will have to be repaid, with the defender now set for arguably his biggest season yet with the Reds.
