Curtis Jones reacts after what Alexis Mac Allister said about him following Sunday’s game

Curtis Jones thanked Alexis Mac Allister for some kind words about him after Liverpool’s win over West Ham on Sunday.

Jones and Mac Allister started in midfield together at Anfield, as the Reds ran out 3-1 winners. Having provided the crucial assist for Darwin Nunez to put Liverpool 2-1 up, Mac Allister was in-front of the LFCTV cameras after the game.

But instead of lauding his own performance too much, the Argentine praised his fellow midfielders, including Jones.

“Dom [Szoboszlai] is a fantastic player, as [Wataru] Endo and Ryan [Gravenberch] are as well,” Mac Allister gushed. “Curtis, we’ve got a lot of good players and I really enjoy playing with them.”

After the final sentence, Macca gave a little glance and a chuckle off-camera. Although not mentioned at the time, Liverpool’s Inside Anfield YouTube series picked up exactly what – or rather who – was distracting the 24-year-old.

Of course it was Curtis, it’s always Curtis. Spotted watching the interview inside the bowels of Anfield, the Scouser thanks Mac Allister as soon as the interview finishes.

“Thank you Macca, I heard that bro!” says the 22-year-old, giving his teammate a firm handshake. Mac Allister gives an inaudible reply with a very earnest face, before the two break out into a mutual smile. You love to see it.

Jones shows positive influence

It’s little glimpses like this which really highlight just what an asset Jones is to this Liverpool team.

Not only is he now finding his feet as one of Jurgen Klopp’s go-to midfielders, but he’s also just great to have around the changing room.

That can sometimes feel like a back-handed compliment to give, but it really is important. Although he has huge confidence in his own ability, you’ll never find Jones complaining or sulking about being out of the team.

Instead, he rallies behind whoever is playing and seems to be a genuinely positive influence and a universally liked member of the squad.

Of course, that shouldn’t be enough to keep you in a Liverpool roster this good. But, thankfully, Jones is now very much getting minutes based on merit.

As Mac Allister points out, the 22-year-old is now part of the Reds’ core group of midfielders. Having kicked on in the past six months, the potential Jones possesses is incredibly excited.

As for Macca himself, he looks to have settled in absolutely perfectly. There are still one or two things to iron out on the pitch, but he’s by and large playing in a deeper-lying role than he’d like. In the meantime, the support and acceptance of teammates like Jones will be doing the former Brighton man the world of good. Two good lads!
